Is
AI DANGEROUS?

Terminator, HAL 9000, Skynet – science fiction paints dark pictures of AI. But how realistic are these scenarios? A sober assessment.

person Peter Neumann

Elon Musk warns about AI. Stephen Hawking warned about AI. Movies show robots that want to wipe out humanity. Should we be worried? The answer is more complex than yes or no – and less dramatic than Hollywood suggests.

What Are We Actually Talking About?

There are different types of AI risks that are often conflated:

  • Current AI risks: Real problems that exist right now
  • Medium-term risks: Developments in the coming years
  • Superintelligence: Hypothetical, far-off scenarios

Most science fiction fears concern the third category – the least foreseeable one.

Real Risks Today

The actual problems with AI are less spectacular but more concrete:

  • Bias in data: AI learns from historical data – including its biases. A hiring system trained on past decisions can perpetuate discrimination.
  • Misinformation: AI can generate convincing texts, images, and videos. This makes disinformation easier.
  • Dependency: Those who completely delegate decisions to AI lose the ability to make them themselves.
  • Privacy: AI systems need data. How that data is collected and used is often opaque.

Medium-Term Challenges

In the coming years, further questions will become relevant:

  • Jobs: Which jobs will AI take over? How do we prepare people for this?
  • Accountability: Who is liable when an AI decision causes harm?
  • Control: How do we ensure that AI systems do what we want?

And Superintelligence?

The idea of an AI that is smarter than all humans combined and pursues its own goals is theoretically not impossible. But it's also not foreseeable. Current AI is good at specific tasks – but it has no consciousness, no will, no goals of its own.

That could change. When and whether it will, no one knows. That's why experts research "AI safety" – but it's not an imminent threat.

What Does This Mean for You?

As a business owner, you should view AI as a tool – with benefits and risks:

  • Understand what data your AI systems use
  • Maintain control over important decisions
  • Critically question AI results
  • Stay informed about privacy and transparency

Conclusion

AI is not the existential threat from Hollywood movies. But it's not a harmless toy either. The real risks lie in bias, lack of transparency, and excessive dependency. Those who use AI responsibly and know its limits are using a powerful tool – without blind trust.
